Types of Animation

The Y.A.A run workshops in a number of different animation techniques. Below are a few examples of the types of workshops we do.

Stop Motion Animation

Stop motion involves photographing small movements that are then combined together to create the final animation film. Stop motion animation films can be made using a number of different materials. Films can be made using clay/plastacine, paper cutouts, everyday household objects or even using people.  These materials can be combined, for example clay/plastacine models with paper cutout moving backgrounds to create a truly unique three-dimensional film.

Flash Animation

Flash is a computer program that allows students to draw, colour and edit a timeline for their animation film. Flash can be used to create a computer-generated film or to create characters that can be placed into a live footage background.

Silhouette Animation

Making paper models with black paper to create silhouette animations. They can be filmed on a variety of different backgrounds and create a simple but stunning animation film.

Sand Animation

Sand animation is a very quick type of animation, as there is very little preparation involved. Sand is moved on top of a light box to create abstract or figurative animations. Although sand animation is quite straightforward the results can be very elegant.

Hand Drawn Animation

Hand drawn animation needs only the simplest of materials, a pen and paper. Slight alterations are drawn onto pictures to create the illusion of movement.
